Ubuntu 9.10 Released:

Normally, I wouldn’t release this as a blog-post since there are probably about 10,000 other geeks online typing this exact same post into their blogs right now.

A “twitter”? Sure!, but a full blog-post? Nah

HOWEVER, I did want to post this because 9.10 is special, both the Ubuntu and Kubuntu “flavors”. I tested both throughout the release cycle, and the GNOME based Ubuntu won me over, in fact, I doubt, honestly I could ever use KDE again for any length of time.

I’ve been kinda quiet about Linux lately – I’ve been trying out some things w/ my workstation (Dell Precision 690), weighing some options on what I wanted to run on it after some upgrades and Ubuntu has won out – it was down to the wire – I last “reloaded” Ubuntu 2 days ago to get a head start on the “rush” to get the final version, and I’ll run an “apt-get upgrade” when I get home tonight and be done.

Anyway – back on topic…

Ubuntu 9.10 is hands down, bar-none the nicest, most polished GNOME desktop I’ve ever logged into. If you have ever thought of trying Linux, and just never got around too it, now is the time. The “Paper Cuts” project paid off big time, and the level of polish – all the way down to the new Icon set (love the systray icons) is unprecedented.

Here is the release announcement, the release notes and the Feature Tour for you to check out.

If you need help, remember to log into #ubuntu on Freenode – I’m jayson_r there and if I’m online, hopefully I can chat w/ you some time. If not, there are usually a few hundred helpful souls there ready to help you out!

Happy Computing!

I made a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.10 x32. The GUI looks really nice this time. If it goes well I will also upgrade the remaining. We use Ubuntu Gnome at home (x32 and x64).

I also have a Pentium 3, 1 Ghz computer, 768 MB Ram. It ran Ubuntu pretty slow. This time I installed Xubuntu 9.10. This was my first time trying XFCE. I was pleasantly surprised that XFCE looks pretty nice.
The computer is slightly more responsive that with Gnome. This computer is mostly used for web surfing and reading PDF, so a light weight desktop environment is really well adapted.

I was puzzled by too many Desktop environments available in Linux. Now I that I have tried XFCE, I understand better the concept and actually like it. At the next release I am looking forward to the release of Lubuntu (based on LXDE environment). I hope it will make it for the 10.04 release time frame.

really awesome release with bunch of new stuff and almost no issue on my end.

i know about 30% are having some type of problem or bug, but this is normal as i also had some initial probs with jaunty and for a pre-LTS we need many testing the new tech

also i hope the papercuts can get into the “internal” bugs soon, not just the interface (wonderful job there)

with the way things are dev i know 10.04 will b really great

    Hi Jayson,

I also have a Dell Precision 690 and I’m testing Ubuntu 9.10, but I don’t have audio, did you manage to make it work?

    Thanks

There might be different sound options offered in the 690, but I didn’t do anything special for mine other than install…

I’m having the same issue. Have you solved this yet? I’ve only got the SIGMATEL audio on my 690 system.
